Born and raised in the small town of Sonora California – literally, the gateway to Yosemite Valley – it’s not surprising that Dean Fleming began rock climbing at the early age of 12. After high school, Dean followed his lifelong dream of becoming a rock climbing guide by quickly gaining Wilderness First Responder training and certification by The American Mountain Guides Association. At the age of 19 Dean became the youngest certified professional guide in the country.
After guiding four summer seasons, Dean focused his attention back to school, enrolling at Columbia Junior College near his home town of Sonora. This is where he gained an interest in writing, photography and earth science, yet while attending Dean’s main focus was documenting the hundreds of limestone boulders that surround the college campus. Dean’s recently published guidebook titled Columbia Bouldering features area maps, history and detailed descriptions for over 250 rock climbing routes at Columbia State Park and Columbia Junior College. Dean is now a freelance writer and photographer based out of the small town of Sonora, California.
